GIVI Magazine - Maggio 2018

ENGLISH TEXT ANDREA ROMAGNOLI Training I began as a surveyor as I liked drawing. Then the passion for motorcycles, bikes and the racing sector led me to attend the faculty of Mechanical Engineering. I graduated and now I'm preparing exams for my Masters in Automotive. They are really good at the faculty and they teach us every aspect of design, thanks above all to the various projects made available like the Motostudent project in which I participated. And here in GIVI I have the opportunity to put it into practice. What are you working on? Francesco and I are more on the carpentry, then on the design of the hooks for the soft and rigid bags. Currently I'm going into the design of the various molds. Which metal is used for the hooks? It depends on what it’s used for. The quality of the metal is high and involves various treatments like cataphoresis, painting, etc. Each kit is tested for a long period of time before arriving on the market. What is the most sophisticated machine used in carpentry? From the point of view of visual impact, surely, the automations offered by automatic bending machines. Even the process of robotic welding leaves guests speechless. What do you like about your job? When entering the world of work, I was afraid that I would be sitting at a desk for hours. Fortunately, in GIVI it's not like that. Here I have the opportunity to see several aspects related to design. I am always involved in various projects including those for the various motorcycle manufacturers, and following the production processes. What are your ambitions for the future? I am very happy to work in the motorcycle sector! It's really a dream and I would like to continue in this direction, perhaps in the racing sector. Talking about motorcycles, what was your first "two-wheeler"? A Malaguti Grizzly 50 at the age of 8. I took part in motocross competitions in the various classes until the second year of university and then I was not able to train because of my studies. Lately I’ve switched to road racing: my current bike is a BMW S1000R. FRANCESCO PELIZZARI I imagine that some of the things Andrea told me also apply to you? Yes. Same university and identical training phase. Previously, I attended the same high school as Paolo, but wasn’t his classmate. Was your passion for bikes what convinced you? Sure. But it was also a job choice: in the automotive field, the figure of the mechanical engineer is always sought after. And then there was the interlude of the Motostudent project, right? Did it give you any valuable credits? Yes, a real dream. Build a bike from scratch and see it run on the track. No credits, unfortunately. At least not here in Italy. Abroad, this commitment is recognized. On the other hand, to give space to this project, I lost some time with my studies... If I remember correctly you're still on internship here in GIVI Yes, until October. Are your carpentry tasks similar to Andrea's? In part yes. I have just arrived and I am a bit in the transition phase. I am learning and at the same time I try to apply my perspective, making use of my training. What are your expectations for the future? The dream would be to design and make racing bikes, but as a child I wanted to be a mechanic. My figure in GIVI reflects this double passion a lot. Here I spend some time planning and then I move on the machines and I immediately see the result. So I really have to thank the company for the opportunity they have given me. What was your first bike or scooter? My first two wheeler was a Piaggio Energy 50 scooter. The first bike was a KTM 125. I was 16 years old. Currently I ride a Honda CBF600 ... and I get teased by them (pointing to the other 3). Why do they tease you? Because previously I had a CBR. I really enjoyed riding it but after a 500km ride I came home with a broken back. After several reconsiderations I chose comfort over speed. PAOLO CAMNASIO Paolo you’re up... Scientific high school, then I moved to the University of Brescia, still same course in mechanical engineering. I too was aiming for a specialization in Automotive. Two and four wheels have always been my passion. This is my domain. It has never crossed my mind to look at other sectors of the industry. I had the revelation with the Formula Student (then came the Motostudent), competition between Universities, born in USA, with cars like Formula 1 but on a reduced scale. When I discovered that at the faculty of Brescia there was a Department of M.A. course that focused on this project I threw myself headlong into it. We breathed the air of the circuits with some trips abroad. It was nice. How is it done in other countries, is there a chance to meet with business managers while attending, or does the world of work stay on the outside until after graduation? Never met a company within my faculty. Following the courses exclusively, without taking advantage of some extracurricular project, direct proposals are unlikely to arrive. Are you an off-roader or do you prefer the asphalt? I started off-road because at home the word "street bike" could not even be pronounced. For the very first time, at the age of 15, I climbed onto a two- wheeled motorcycle as a passenger. A few hundred meters were enough to make me understand that I wanted that vehicle more than anything else in the world. My parents, thinking that I could change my mind, said "if you want it, get a job and buy it". So I did, putting aside the money for a 125cc enduro (the compromise I talked about before). I traveled about 30 thousand kilometers with this bike and I really love off-road riding. Then I switched to the sport types. And the electric ones? Have you had the chance to try them? What do you think about them? They are innovative. They could also exceed the motorcycles driven by the classic petrol engine. Here in GIVI we have a ZERO road that is fantastic. Also driving the company’s Toyota PRIUS excited me. I like every new technology relating to cars and motorcycles. It was obvious I hope. To which GIVI projects have you made a contribution? For about a year I worked on an automatic lock for cases, controllable via an APP to download on your smartphone. It was not easy because the project did not interfere with the operation of the original lock. We presented it at EICMA 2017 as a concept. Based on your biking experience, tell me about a GIVI product that you think tops it all? We first talked about it all together: the full carbon helmet. It's really crazy and I hope you keep producing it. There is great competition I know, but passing from off-road to road bikes, it was difficult to get used to street helmets because of the small space in front of the mouth. This model made by GIVI made me change my mind. What kind of motorcycle do you currently ride? A Brutale 990R Beware of the new tutors who control speed. They pity no one. I know. With bikes like ours it would be better to go exclusively on the track. We are already thinking about it. What are your other passions? I like animals. Just to earn some money, I was a dog sitter in the past. How do you view the transportation of cats and small dogs on motorcycles or scooters? My dog would not wear it. It's difficult. You can’t tie him and he would try to escape. There are already some proposals on the market ... none of which are particularly convincing. GIVI could design it… Givi Magazine May 2018 - Givi Inside  43
