BACK TO GROWTH With COVID under control (at least so it would seem) and the war in Ukraine still leaving no room to international diplomacy, entrepreneurs try to find their position on the market. When it comes to our sector, registrations are on the up practically in all European countries where the “passion” for motorcycles is historically stronger (Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the UK), which is in itself a good sign. Here at GIVI, no one has stopped believing in recovery: between the end of 2021 and the first part of 2022, we attended motorcycle fairs, developed important new accessories, studied original technical solutions such as the fixing system for Remove-X side bags and also introduced solutions for the cycling world thanks to a considerable and well-structured bag collection presented to the press in April (news report in the magazine). The second part of 2022 will proceed in the same way: in July, we will take part in the BMW Motorrad Day in Berlin, followed by the eagerly-awaited WDW Ducati. Then, in October and November, we will meet our public during the two leading sector fairs: Intermot in Cologne and EICMA in Milan. We will also attend Motorcycle Live 2022 at NEC in Birmingham in November. At the moment, our Spanish branch is also busy promoting the brand through the events linked with MotoGP races held on the Iberian territory. This ongoing close contact with end customers and Motorcycle manufacturers will enable us to keep an even closer eye on the changes in the motorcycle and scooter segments to meet the tastes of the public and the markets. Lately, the press has highlighted the progress made by some Asian motorcycle producers when it comes to style, and the appreciation of European enthusiasts for some of their models is tangible. We are ready. Our R&D department is already at work to create specific accessories for these new entries. We will also be ready for the requests coming in from the electric world when it comes to both consumers and shared commuting. For bikers/scooter riders, GIVI is mainly synonymous with comfort, practicality and reliability. The introduction of the new certification for motorcycle helmets - ECE 22-06 (20 years after the previous one) - will make safety our focus. Our objective is to attend EICMA with a collection that features all types of GIVI helmets (flip-up, full-face, jet, demi-jet and off-road). It is quite a challenge and we will illustrate it in this issue of the Magazine as part of the TECH column. Happy reading. ENGLISH TEXT Con il COVID sotto controllo (almeno così sembra) e una guerra, quella in Ucraina, che ancora non lascia margini di manovra alla diplomazia internazionale, gli imprenditori provano a ritrovare il proprio posizionamento all’interno del mercato. Per quanto riguarda il nostro settore, le immatricolazioni sono in crescita praticamente in tutti i paesi europei dove la “passione” per la motocicletta è storicamente più forte (Germania, Francia, Italia, Spagna, UK) e questo è di per sé un gran bel segnale. Qui in GIVI nessuno ha smesso di credere nella ripresa; tra la fine del 2021 e la prima parte del 2022 abbiamo portato avanti impegni a 360° tornando a frequentare le fiere del settore moto, sviluppando nuovi e importanti accessori, studiando inedite soluzioni tecniche, ad esempio il sistema di fissaggio per borse laterali Remove-X, e allargando le nostre proposte anche alle due ruote a pedali con una collezione di borse importante e ben strutturata, presentata alla stampa di settore nel mese di aprile (all’interno del magazine trovate il reportage). La seconda parte del 2022 seguirà questo trend e ci vedrà impegnati a luglio ai BMW Motorrad Days di Berlino, poi in Italia all’attesissimo WDW Ducati; tra ottobre e novembre incontreremo il nostro pubblico alle due fiere di settore più importanti al mondo: Intermot a Colonia e EICMA a Milano. A novembre abbiamo in calendario un appuntamento anche nel Regno Unito: il Motorcycle Live 2022, presso il NEC di Birmingham. In questo momento anche la nostra filiale spagnola, attraverso eventi legati alle gare della MotoGP che si terranno in terra Iberica, è impegnata nella promozione del marchio. Questo continuo stretto contatto con l’utente finale e con le Case moto ci permetterà di seguire con un’attenzione ancora maggiore i cambiamenti del segmento moto e scooter, in funzione dei gusti del pubblico e dei mercati. La stampa di settore ha messo ultimamente in risalto l’avanzamento “stilistico” dimostrato da alcuni produttori moto asiatici e l’apprezzamento degli appassionati europei verso alcuni dei loro modelli è tangibile. Noi siamo pronti. Il nostro reparto R&D sta già lavorando alla creazione di accessori ad hoc per queste new entry. Così come non ci troveremo impreparati con le richieste in arrivo dal mondo dell’elettrico, sia in ambito consumer che per il commuting in condivisione. Per il motociclista/scooterista, GIVI è principalmente sinonimo di comfort, praticità e affidabilità. L’introduzione della nuova omologazione per i caschi moto, la ECE 22-06 (arrivata a 20 anni di distanza dalla precedente) ci vedrà quest’anno concentrati sulla sicurezza. L’obiettivo che ci siamo posti è quello di arrivare a EICMA con una collezione che presenti tutte le tipologie di caschi GIVI (apribili, integrali, jet, demi-jet, off-road). LA SPIAGGIA DI TEL AVIV VIVA IL FLY & RIDE! Israele è un paese piccolo ma estremamente ricco di luoghi e città da visitare. Il nostro tour di una settimana ci ha portato ai punti più belli del deserto del Negev e alle città principali, come Tel Aviv e soprattutto Gerusalemme. Inoltre, essendo Israele una nazione difficile da raggiungere via terra, la formula “fly & ride” è quella che rende tutto più semplice e pratico. Si atterra, si prende la moto a noleggio e si parte (la patente internazionale non serve per i noleggi). A Tel Aviv sono presenti diverse società che noleggiano moto, anche di media cilindrata, perfette per questo viaggio. Non serve nulla di tassellato in quanto si viaggia principalmente su asfalto e le strade sterrate sono piste facili per tutti e tutte. L’ITINERARIO Abbiamo scelto il sud di Israele per attraversare i luoghi più scenografici del deserto, dove a tratti sembrava di stare su Marte. Il periodo scelto? Fine febbraio. Le temperature sono fresche e miti, mentre in estate superano i 40 gradi. Di solito piove pochissimo durante l’anno, soprattutto nel deserto, ma siamo riusciti a prendere anche qualche goccia, per la felicità degli abitanti locali. Neanche il tempo di bagnarsi che dopo i primi raggi di sole eravamo già asciutti. Chi ha più tempo può arrivare fino al Mar Rosso, per visitare il Timna Park e tuffarsi oltre la barriera corallina di Eilat. TEL AVIV E LA BEERI FOREST Atterrati di sera a Tel Aviv, città molto viva di notte per i numerosi locali e ristoranti, posizionati anche sulla bellissima spiaggia, ci siamo riposati nel centrale Brown Hotel Lighthouse, per prepararci al meglio per il giorno successivo. Al mattino, caricate le moto e lasciati i bagagli più ingombranti, siamo partiti per la parte Nord del deserto del Negev, molto verde in questo periodo per le piogge che arrivano dal Mediterraneo. Lungo la strada verso sud in direzione di Netivot e Sde Boker, ci si può fermare (e anche campeggiare) all’interno di giardini famosi per la fioritura, sia della senape che degli anemoni, una specie di fiori protetta. Nei pressi di Sde Boker merita una sosta la tomba di Ben Gurion, il fondatore dello Stato di Israele, che si affaccia su di un canyon molto suggestivo. Il verde ci ha abbandonati da diversi chilometri per i più classici colori aridi del deserto, con una temperatura ideale intorno ai 18 gradi. CONSIGLI UTILI Quando andare L’estate in Israele è molto calda, soprattutto nel Sud e sul Mar Morto; per questo motivo consigliamo di visitare il paese nel resto dell’anno, inverno incluso, quando le temperature sono più miti e oscillano dai 10 gradi di minima ai 20 di massima. Attenzione al deserto, il clima secco e il vento possono alzare un po’ di polvere, per questo motivo consigliamo di bere tanto, anche quando non fa caldo e di portarvi un collirio, oltre a proteggere bene gli occhi con un casco con visiera o utilizzando una maschera da cross. Voli e noleggi moto Israele è facilmente raggiungibile da ogni Paese europeo. Per quanto riguarda l’Italia, gli scali principali sono Milano e Roma. Easyjet o El Al sono le principali compagnie aeree, con voli quotidiani verso Tel Aviv, città dove si trovano diversi noleggi di moto e scooter. Le strade sono quasi tutte asfaltate e anche i pochi sterrati che abbiamo fatto si sono rivelati piste molto ben battute. Potete noleggiare anche moto stradali, i tasselli non servono. Per il noleggio è sufficiente la patente italiana, ma consigliamo sempre di informarvi con la società che vi fornirà la moto. Dove altro andare e come orientarsi Una settimana permette di vedere buona parte del Sud del paese e le principali città ma, se avete più tempo, vi consigliamo di arrivare fino a Eilat, non solo per bagni e immersioni nel Mar Rosso ma soprattutto per lo spettacolare Timna Park. Per tutte le informazioni turistiche, anche in italiano, vi consigliamo vivamente di consultare il sito ufficiale del Turismo israeliano, ricco di consigli utili, guide e di tutte le informazioni sulla viabilità e sulle zone israeliane e palestinesi in cui è possibile transitare. Informazioni importanti si trovano anche sul sito GoIsrael. Dove dormire Oltre a numerosi hotel per tutte le tasche, sia nelle città che nei borghi più piccoli, il nostro consiglio è di sperimentare i meravigliosi glamping situati lungo il percorso, tra le dune, nei canyon, nelle oasi, come l’Ein Gedi Camp Lodge. Campeggi classici sono situati in modo strategico persino nei siti archeologici, sempre molto ben attrezzati. Cosa mangiare La cucina israeliana è come il paese stesso, un mix emozionante di tradizioni e culture. L’alimentazione è tipicamente mediterranea e mediorientale, a base di carne, pesce e verdure. I ceci la fanno da padrone con l’hummus, buonissimo, servito ovunque e comunque, accompagnato dalla salsa di tahina a base di sesamo, oppure nei falafel, polpette di ceci e spezie. Le carni, grigliate o in polpette (kebab) sono leggermente speziate e davvero buone, così come le verdure, immancabili a ogni pasto. Consigliamo come sempre di sperimentare tutto, in ogni angolo del paese, senza dimenticare i dolci, a base di miele o di formaggio di capra, uno più buono dell’altro. 7 Givi Magazine June 2022
Viaggiamo verso sud, per arrivare al secondo paesaggio mozzafiato, Ein Avdat Nationa Park. Qui vi consigliamo di scendere dalla sella e fare una piacevole camminata nel canyon, seguendo il torrente che porta a una cascata. IL NEGEV E I CRATERI NATURALI Mipze Ramon è la piccola cittadina dove ci fermiamo due notti per esplorare i dintorni. Si parte proprio dall’omonimo cratere, il Machtesh Ramon, che sembra appartenere ad un altro pianeta. Qui ci sono numerose zone attraversabili in moto, anche in fuoristrada senza alcuna difficoltà, come il Gvanim Wadi. Come scopriremo, le aree attrezzate per poter campeggiare o fermarvi per una sosta in mezzo alla natura e al silenzio del deserto sono presenti con una frequenza inaspettata. Il nostro consiglio è di chiedere sempre informazioni e indicazioni negli hotel della cittadina e alle guide locali, come Mr. Iftach Dvash, che saranno felici di accompagnarvi, in moto, a scoprire il deserto e i wadi che lui conosce come le sue tasche. Alle bellezze naturali qui si aggiungono i siti archeologici di Avdat e Shivta, insediamenti costruiti dai nomadi Nabatei per agevolare i commerci e i passaggi lungo la Via dell’Incenso che univa la Giordania all’Arabia. Tra l’altro abbiamo anche avuto la fortuna di percorrere tanti chilometri in compagnia del Direttore Generale del Ministero del Turismo Israeliano, Mr. Dani Shahar, con la sua BMW GS 40° Anniversario: una persona davvero a modo, con una grande passione per le due ruote. Per non farvi mancare nulla vi consigliamo di allungare il tragitto fino al confine egiziano, lungo la strada numero 10. Fate una sosta a Ezuz: è un piccolo villaggio dove assaggiare i piatti tipici fatti in casa e una buonissima pizza cotta in un forno italiano. Da qui la strada che costeggia il confine è davvero bellissima: un viaggio in solitaria nel deserto, salutando ogni tanto i militari annoiati nelle torrette di guardia. Le curve non mancano, non sono tante, ma quando si sale aumentano assieme al piacere che solo questi panorami riescono a offrire. MAR MORTO E MASADA Il mattino seguente si prosegue verso Sud-Est. Ci attende il Mar Morto, ma lungo la strada il panorama continua a cambiare e le soste per foto e video non si contano più. Il primo punto, immancabile per noi motociclisti, è lo Scorpions’ Trail, vero e proprio passo di montagna che dalle alture del Negev scende attraverso numerosi tornanti che affacciano sul deserto. A questo punto il tempo è tiranno e siamo costretti a tornare verso Nord, scendendo nella più profonda depressione della Terra. Il Mar Morto si trova infatti a 400 metri sotto il livello del mare; per questo motivo in estate il caldo è quasi insostenibile. Ma prima di fermarci in hotel, risaliamo di 1.000 metri per toccare la storica collina di Arad, un sito archeologico con alle spalle 5.000 anni di storia. Il luogo è molto suggestivo e attrezzato, come tanti parchi nazionali israeliani, per il campeggio. IL PAESAGGIO LUNARE DEL EIN AVDAT NATIONAL PARK 8 Turismo
Se il mattino ha l’oro in bocca, il nostro risveglio alle 04:00 ha un sapore diverso, di sonno e allo stesso tempo di sfida. Ci aspettano quasi 3 km di salita… a piedi, per 450 metri di dislivello: la meta è la cima di Masada, la città costruita da Erode nel 37 A.C. da cui ammirare un’alba mozzafiato. La camminata si è rivelata molto tosta… ma potete “barare” e fare l’alternativa da ovest, di soli 700 metri di lunghezza e pochissimo dislivello, oppure perdere l’alba e prendere la funivia. Il sito di cui stiamo parlando è unico non solo per la storia e l’ingegneria che nasconde, tra terme e acquedotti, ma anche per il panorama circostante, unico al mondo! La stanchezza mette appetito, e noi centauri ci facciamo tentare dai profumi provenienti da un tipico ristorante mediorientale ma dal nome indiano: al Taj Mahal di Nevé Zohar vi aspetta Sharon, un’affascinante signora Yemenita che vi delizierà con tantissime ricette diverse. Prima di lasciare il Mar Morto, dedichiamo il pomeriggio al relax, tra un bagno di fango e un tuffo nel salatissimo specchio d’acqua davanti all’hotel, dove la salinità al 33% vi farà galleggiare come materassini e l’acqua, a fine febbraio, è come da noi a giugno, perfetta! GERUSALEMME Il viaggio si avvicina alla fine, ma c’è tempo per un ultimo tour. Accendiamo le moto e partiamo in direzione Ein Gedi, per visitare un Kibbutz che ospita un giardino botanico e l’Ein Gedi Camp Lodge, dove si può dormire in tenda, nei bungalow o in bellissimi pulmini Citroen Anni 70 con aria condizionata! Ci attende Gerusalemme, caotica ma interessantissima per il suo mix culturale, ma deviamo un’ultima volta in Palestina per una visita veloce al Monastero greco ortodosso di San Giorgio. Anche questo sito, davvero magico, mettetelo nella lista dei luoghi assolutamente da non perdere. Occhio alle spremute di melograno che i ragazzini vendono li vicino, “allappano” un po’! Arriviamo a Gerusalemme nella parte moderna della città, a due passi dalla città storica. Il centro è molto trafficato, così lasciamo le moto in hotel per proseguire a piedi. Gerusalemme non è una metropoli comune, come ben sapete. E’ un concentrato indescrivibile di religioni, culture e storia. I vicoli s’intrecciano senza logica in un affascinante labirinto che vi porta dal quartiere cristiano a quello musulmano a quello ebraico senza che ve ne rendiate conto. Spezie, botteghe, ristorantini, mercanti, frati, rabbini, bambini, chiese, moschee… vi trasporteranno in una quarta dimensione. Passiamo dai luoghi di culto di ogni religione come la Chiesa del Santo Sepolcro e la Stanza dell’ultima cena di Gesù, ricostruita dai crociati. Visitiamo il Western Wall, anche noto come muro del pianto e la tomba di Re David, passando sotto i minareti delle moschee che puntuali richiamano i fedeli alla preghiera. Gerusalemme è talmente ricca e piena di siti storici e storie da raccontare che consigliamo a tutti di farvi accompagnare da una guida esperta. RITORNO ALLA BASE Il nostro viaggio termina a Tel Aviv, che dista solo un’ora da Gerusalemme. Sulla strada non dimenticate di visitare le cantine e i vigneti che rendono questa terra ancora più preziosa. Sono produzioni giovani ma cresciute molto bene e lo sentirete dagli aromi e dalla bontà dei vini bianchi e rossi. La cantina Clos de Gat è un esempio di maestria di come in soli vent’anni i loro vini siano diventati un’eccellenza a livello nazionale e internazionale. A Tel Aviv potete riposarvi in spiaggia e divertirvi la sera, è una metropoli moderna con il vantaggio del Mediterraneo per un tuffo estivo. Da non perdere la città antica di Jaffa e il Museo dell’Arte. La linea X-Line, in particolare la borsa da serbatoio XL04, è stata la scelta perfetta per la BMW R 1250 GS, non solo per la sua forma che si adatta alla perfezione a questa moto (del resto è stata modellata proprio sulla GS) senza interferire sulla guida, ma soprattutto per i materiali molto leggeri e resistenti a polvere e acqua. Infallibile il sistema Tanklock che permette di sganciare e rimontare le borse da serbatoio in un secondo. Lo zaino X-Line XL03 è comodissimo, molto capiente e si aggancia ovunque sulla moto, diventando un pratico borsone da sella, anche questo impermeabile e resistente, perfetto per ogni moto viaggiatore. Lo zaino è stato utilizzato anche come bagaglio a mano nel volo per Tel-Aviv! La linea “morbida” Canyon, è universalmente utilizzabile sulla maggior parte delle moto, e di conseguenza anche sulla BMW F 750 GS che abbiamo usato noi. La borsa da serbatoio GRT715, si sgancia in un attimo agendo sulle 4 clip; il borsone impermeabile GRT712B ci ha permesso di trasportare tutto il necessario senza rinunciare a niente. ENGLISH TEXT TRAVELLING THE NEGEV DESERT Israel, a land of religions and history, cities and deserts, is much closer than you might think - a little under a four hour flight from Milan. We enjoyed a week’s Fly & Ride experience, touring some of the most evocative spots in the south. And we took GIVI soft bags from the X-Line and Canyon ranges along for the ride. ISRAEL BY BIKE Photos by Fabio Capone, words by F. Capone and Arianna Meda LONG LIVE THE FLY & RIDE! Israel is a small country but one that is brimming with places and cities to visit. Our week-long tour took us to the most beautiful spots in the Negev desert and the main cities, such as Tel Aviv and particularly Jerusalem. Considering that Israel is a tricky country to reach via land, the “fly & ride” formula makes it all a lot easier and more practical. You land, pick up the rental bike and you’re off (no international license is needed for rental). In Tel Aviv, various companies rent motorcycles, and these include mid-sized models, perfect for this trip. And you don’t need knobby tyres as the roads are mainly tarmacked and the few dirt roads are easy for anybody. THE ROUTE We chose the south of Israel in order to be able to cross the most scenic spots in the desert, which had us feeling as if we were on Mars at times. When did we go? Late February. Temperatures are cool and mild, while they exceed 40°C in the summer. It generally rains very little throughout the year, particularly in the desert, but we did experience a few showers, to the delight of the locals. We barely had time to get wet though and the sun had already dried us off. Those with more time could travel on to the Red Sea, to visit Timna Park and dive at the Eilat coral reef. TEL AVIV AND THE BEERI FOREST After landing in the evening in Tel Aviv, a city that is very lively at night with its many bars and restaurants, also along the beautiful beach, we rest at the centrally-located Brown Hotel Lighthouse in preparation for the following day. In the morning, having loaded the bikes and stored our more bulky luggage, we set off for the north of the Negev desert, very green at this time of year due to the rains coming from the Mediterranean. Travelling south in the direction of Netivot and Sde Boker, you can stop (and even camp) inside gardens famous for their blossoms, both mustard and anemone, which is a type of protected flower. Around Sde Boker, it’s worth stopping at the Tomb of Ben Gurion, founder of the State of Israel, which overlooks a picturesque canyon. We had left any greenery behind a few miles back and were now surrounded by those classic arid desert shades, with an ideal temperature of 18°C. We travelled south, to reach a second breath-taking landscape, Ein Avdat National Park. We recommend you stop here and take a short walk through the canyon, following the stream that leads to a waterfall. NEGEV AND ITS NATURAL CRATERS Mipze Ramon is the small town where we spent two nights exploring the area. We started from the crater of the same name, the Makhtesh Ramon, which looks to be something from another planet. There are many places that can be explored by bike here, and even some easy off-road routes, like the Gvanim Wadi. And, as we came to realise, there are a surprising number of rest stops and areas set up for camping, surrounded by nature and the silence of the desert. We suggest that you always ask for information and directions at local hotels, or by talking to local guides, like Mr. Iftach Dvash, who will be happy to join you, by bike, as you explore the desert and the wadi that he knows like the back of his hand. Other natural wonders here include the archaeological sites of Avdat and Shivta, settlements built by the Nabatei nomads to facilitate trade and movement along the Incense Route that linked Jordan to Arabia. Stop off at Ezuz, a small village where you can taste typical home made dishes and very good pizza cooked in an Italian oven. There are some turns, not many it must be said, but once you start to climb they increase, as does the pleasure that only this kind of view can invoke. DEAD SEA AND MASADA The following morning we carried on towards the south-east. The Dead Sea awaited us, but the view continued to change along the way and we lost count of how many times we stopped to take photos and videos. The first spot, an unmissable one for us bikers, was the Scorpions’ Trail, a real mountain pass that descends from the Negev uplands, the many hairpin bends offering views across the desert. Time was now flying though, and we were forced to head north, heading down to the lowest dry land on Earth. The Dead Sea actually lies 400 metres below sea level and this is why the heat here is almost unbearable in summer. But before stopping at the hotel, we climbed back up 1000 metres to the historic Arad hill, an archaeological site with 5000 When to go Summer in Israel is very hot, particularly in the south and at the Dead Sea; for this reason, we suggest visiting the country at another time of year, even winter, when the temperatures are more mild and are between 10°C and 20°C. Be careful in the desert. The dry climate and wind can throw up dust, so we suggest you drink a lot, even when it’s not so hot, and carry eye drops, as well as protecting your eyes with a helmet with visor or MX goggles. Flights and motorcycle rental Israel can be easily reached from Europe. As for Italy, the main points of departure are Milan and Rome. Easyjet and Ellal are the main airlines, with daily flights to Tel Aviv, where you can find various motorcycle and scooter rental companies. The roads are nearly all tarmacked and the few dirt roads we travelled are well trodden, so you can rent road bikes, as knobby tyres are not needed. You can rent a motorcycle with an Italian (or equivalent) licence, but we recommend you always check with the company that is renting you the bike. What else to see and finding your way In a week you can see a good part of the south and its main cities but if you have more time, we suggest you travel on to Eilat, not only to be able to bathe and dive in the Red Sea but particularly for the stunning Timna Park. For all tourist information, we strongly suggest you consult the official Israeli tourism website, packed with useful advice, guides and information about traffic and the areas of Israel and Palestine that you can travel through. More important information can also be found on the GoIsrael website. Where to sleep In addition to the many hotels to suit all budgets in both the cities and the smallest villages, we suggest you also try the amazing glamping sites located along the route, in the dunes, canyons and oases. The Ein Gedi Camp Lodge is just one example. Classic camp-sites are located in strategic spots, even at archaeological sites, and are always well equipped. What to eat Israeli cuisine is like the country itself, an exciting blend of traditions and cultures. The food is typically Mediterranean and Middle Eastern, so largely meat, fish and vegetable-based. Chickpeas take centre stage in hummus, so good and served anywhere and everywhere, alongside a sesame tahini paste, or in falafel, chickpea patties and spices. The meats, either grilled or in kebab form, are delicately spiced and really tasty, as are the vegetables, an essential part of any meal. As usual, we suggest you try everything, in every corner of the country, and without forgetting the desserts, which are made with honey or goat’s cheese, each more delicious than the last. The X-Line of bags, particularly the XL04 tank bag, was the ideal choice for the BMW R 1250 GS, not only due to its shape, which perfectly adapts to this bike without interfering with the riding (it was in fact modelled on the GS), but particularly for the very lightweight materials that are resistant to dust and water. The Tanklock system is flawless, allowing tank bags to be removed and refastened in a second. The X-Line XL03 rucksack is very practical and spacious and can be fastened to any part of the bike, becoming a useful seat cargo bag that is also waterproof and resistant, perfect for every motorcycle traveller. We even used the rucksack as hand luggage on the flight to Tel Aviv! THE GIVI BAGS USED years of history to its name. The place is very evocative and, like so many Israeli national parks, is also set up for camping. If the early bird catches the worm, then our 4 a.m. wake-up call had a different flavour, one of drowsiness but also daring. A climb of almost 3 km waited for us... on foot, for a difference in altitude of 450 metres. Our destination was the top of Masada, the city built by Herod in 37 A.C. from which we admired a breath-taking sunrise. It proved to be a very tough walk... But you can always “cheat” and take the alternative path from the west, which is only 700 metres long with little change in altitude, or you can miss the sunrise and take a cable car instead. The site we’re talking about is unique, not only for the history and engineering it conceals, with its hot springs and aqueducts, but also for the surrounding landscape, which is second to none! Tiredness left us hungry and we were tempted by the aromas coming from a typical Middle Eastern restaurant with an Indian name... At the Taj Mahal in Nevé Zohar, a wonderful Yemeni woman called Sharon was ready to delight us with countless different dishes. Before leaving the Dead Sea, we spent an afternoon relaxing, enjoying a mud bath and a plunge into the very salty mirror of water across from our hotel, where 33% salinity had us floating like a lilo and the water, in February, was as perfect as it in Italy in June! JERUSALEM The journey was coming to an end, but there was time for one last tour. We turned on our engines and headed in the direction of Ein Gedi, to visit a Kibbutz complete with botanical garden and the Ein Gedi Camp Lodge, where you can sleep in tents, bungalows or wonderful 70s air-conditioned Citroen minivans! Jerusalem awaited us, chaotic but so very interesting in terms of its cultural mix. But first, we deviated back into Palestine for a quick visit to Saint George’s Orthodox Monastery. This is another magical site to add to your list of places not to be missed. Look out for the pomegranate juice that the local boys sell around here, it’ll set your teeth on edge! We arrived in the modern part of the city of Jerusalem, very close to the historic centre. There was heavy traffic in the centre, so we left our bikes at the hotel and continued on foot. Jerusalem is no ordinary city, as you well know. It is an indescribable concentration of religions, cultures and history. The narrow roads interweave illogically, making for a fascinating labyrinth that takes you from the Christian district to the Muslim and Jewish quarters before you know it. Spices, stores, small restaurants, vendors, friars, rabbis, children, churches and mosques will all transport you into a fourth dimension. We passed places of worship like the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Room of the Last Supper, reconstructed by the crusaders. We visited the Western Wall, also known as the Wailing Wall, and David’s Tomb, passing beneath the mosques’ minarets which regularly call the faithful to prayer. Jerusalem has so many historical sites and stories to tell that we really suggest you travel with an expert guide. BACK TO BASE Our journey ended in Tel Aviv, which is just an hour from Jerusalem. Along the way, don’t forget to visit the wine cellars and vineyards that further enrich this area. The production is young but very well cultivated, and this becomes clear when you experience the perfumes and flavours of the white and red wines. The Clos de Gat cellar is an example of craftsmanship, its wines having become a standout product at national and international level in the space of just twenty years. In Tel Aviv, you can relax on the beach and enjoy yourself in the evening. It’s a cosmopolitan city where you can also enjoy a dip in the Mediterranean in summer. Don’t miss the ancient city of Jaffa and the Museum of Art. The “soft” Canyon line can be used universally with most bikes, and so also with the BMW F 750 GS that we rode. CONCLUSION We spent the day testing the different components of the various lines, focusing in particular on the Experience bags. The first thing we noticed was how simple and fast it was to put the bags on and release them. They’re stable and secure thanks to three anchoring points. The fixing system also has the advantage of being completely adjustable and can adapt to nearly every rack on the market. The bag materials are water resistant and Givi has created a special system of valves to expel air when the bag is closed. This also allows for better compressibility and releases internal humidity. They’re also equipped with reflective strips in highly visible colours. During our brief test run, we were surprised by the stability of the bags despite their size. The maximum load capacity reaches 80 litres with all three bags. The prices range from €50 to €150 based on the bag size and combination. Givi has used all its experience from the world of motorcycles and brought it over to the world of eBikes and bicycles in a very appropriate way.
